Buff® is very excited to inform everyone that we recently signed as the Official Headwear Sponsor for the African Otter Trail Run 2012 presented by Hi-tec.  Being the “true test of trail ability” and where last year Ryan Sandes silenced his critics and broke the record in 4:40:15 makes this a really exciting event to be associated with. The Otter Hiking Trail is one of the most acclaimed hikes in South Africa along the coastline from Storms River Mouth to Nature’s Valley and its views are simply spectacular, a definite bucket list adventure.

The 2012 race begins in 171 days time and this year a 10km trail run will be introduced to allow the less competitive to test their legs.   The Otter Run is designed for the not so faint hearted, with only 57% completing it in the 8 hour cut-off time in 2010, and in 2011 only 47%! This 8 hour cut-off, relative to the record time, makes the OTTER Run medal one of the “most difficult medals in world endurance events to attain.”

We recently assisted a very special group of 21 scientific and biological researchers for Marion Island. Marion Island which politically forms part of the Western Cape is extremely isolated, receives an abundance of snow, ice and powerful winds ensuring there are no trees, very little vegetation and a boggy terrain. This group dedicate themselves to 14 months of scientific research on marine life, birds and weather systems, a huge commitment especially when fresh fruit and vegetables run out after three months! Each individual received a custom made Marion Island Buff®, an Evac Dry Bag and Travel dry bag amongst a goody bag of other items.

The Icebreaker No Stink Challenge started Monday 23 April which sees two Adventure Inc Facebook fans exercising in Icebreaker for two weeks straight without washing it.  Icebreaker, made of 100% pure merino wool asserts it is “non stinky” due to its natural properties. It reduces sweat levels by absorbing and reducing moisture before it becomes sweat, and bacteria which cause odour find it easier to cling to the smooth fibres of synthetics than the fine scales on merino fibres. Buff®’s participation in the Cape Argus, Cape Epic and Two Oceans was very successful particularly with the excellent support and feedback from our loyal fan base.  We had three ecstatic winners walking away with a custom branded Spiuk Buff® cycling helmet at the Cape Argus.

Experiencing the Absa Cape Epic for the first time is a bit like wearing a piece of Icebreaker; you have to experience it to truly understand how impressive it really is.  Every cyclist deserves a medal of honour for the hill climbs, rock-strewn terrain, incredible distance and emotional strain each rider endures. The organization and media coverage was excellent and Buff® is planning to expand our involvement in the Absa Cape Epic 2013 race.

The Comrades Marathon expo will be held in Durban from the 31 May until 2 June.  Arguably the greatest ultra marathon in the world, “where athletes come from all over the world to combine muscle and sinew and mental strength” to conquer the route. “The race starts on Sunday June 3rd in Pietermaritzburg and finishes in Durban 89km later! Vic Clapham was the man who asked for permission to stage the 89 km race under the name of the Comrades Marathon and for it to become a “living memorial to the spirit of the soldiers of the Great War.” This year will see through 18 000 runners battling it out on the tar to finish the race under the 12 hour cut off time

The Pick n Pay Cape Argus expo was a fantastic success and we would like to thank Eddy Cassar and his team for their excellent organization which contributed to the smooth running of the show. As expected there was a record breaking attendance of around 80 000 visitors and riders and this in turn helped Buff® achieve record breaking sales. After three days it felt like our legs were breaking which I think is another good sign for a busy bustling stand!

Attending trade shows is such a great way to interact and speak to our audience who are of all ages and to get some highly valuable and honest feedback.  It is also a great way for our Buff® staff to show the functional properties of a Buff and explain the new designs such as the infinity Buff made from Eucalyptus which was a huge hit with our female fans.

Chris Willemese Cycles, Sportsmans and Cycle Lab each had a Buff® stand and Cape Union Mart showcased their great new K-WAY custom branded rider Buff which was a great accessory to the launch of their new cycling range which offers great style and cut.

We were also proud to help sponsor WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) with their custom branded Buff® which supports an incredible cause and R100 for every Buff® sold was donated to this fund. WWF showcased their award winning stand made from bamboo which was a much talked about topic amongst the public, and they even sported ipads with various educational videos, overall an excellent effort, well done guys.

Adventure Inc supports and sponsors fantastic expeditions wherever we can and in 2011 we sponsored Sea to Summit and Buff® to Scooter Addicts, a group of four men who are riding from Cape Town to Dublin to raise funds and awareness for the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town.

This massive Scooter riding expedition, which will cover 35 000 km’s  with no support vehicles, takes them up the length of Africa, then through the Middle East and right across Europe – visiting 14 different Children’s Hospitals in total – Ultimately finishing at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Dublin, Ireland – an epic  8 month journey.

The trip is been completed to assist with the raising of funds and awareness for the wonderful work done by these amazing life saving organizations.
